Awards Success for The HEED Project

Gateshead FC Foundation‘s HEED project has seen some tumultuous times in recent years. From relegation from the National League three years ago, to winning the National League North and earning promotion back into the National League in the 21/22 season, this community club has provided much needed support and assistance. During the Covid pandemic, the Vanarama National League North champions set up support phone lines, worked closely with local foodbanks, and ran walking football sessions as part of a wide range of community programmes.

From partnering with the ‘Her Game Too‘ initiative to promote inclusivity and equality for female football participants, to providing half-term football camps to children across the local area (the latest of which saw over 70 7-12 year olds taking part at the Gateshead International Stadium), along with the Junior Heed and Walking Football sessions run by former Gateshead captain and current Community Officer, Ben Clark, ensures there are regular activities and ways for football fans of all ages to participate.

Gateshead FC Foundation have also worked alongside Gateshead-based Autism specialists, Inspired Support, and have a team representing Gateshead FC at the Costa Blanca Cup, to be held in Spain in July 2022.

Ben Clark, former Captain, Manager and current Community Officer said: “Winning this award is for everyone’s hard work over the past 3 years. We have seen our program grow and we will continue to reach out to our community, as a coach I see first hand the difference we are making.”

Gateshead FC Foundation Manager Steven Thornton had this to say: “This is a great honour for the Club and the Foundation to be awarded the Community Club of the Year.  The Foundation looks forward to continuing its work with people from all age groups and all diversities in both football and non-football related activities throughout Gateshead and Newcastle. I would like to thank the National League Trust for their help and support over the last three years, for without which this achievement would not have been possible.”
Congratulations again to all the hard working staff at Gateshead FC’s Foundation, and for more information please visit their website here.
